Understanding How Artificial Intelligence Works?

Dec 28, 2024

Artificial intelligence is one of the most interesting topics in the world nowadays, and it drew my attention. I have always been wondering how machines can think and learn like us. Understanding artificial intelligence sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, but it is, in fact, much more real because artificial Intelligence has enveloped everything surrounding from Netflix suggestions to the cars under development that could drive themselves. But how does AI actually work? Let me illustrate to you step by step in simple terms using an example from my own experience.

Let’s first define what AI is:

AI is a type of computer program that can learn independently and make decisions on its own. It works by using data instead of specific directions given to it, rather like a baby learning to walk. At first, it falls a lot, but then it gets better because it has learned what doesn’t work.

How Does AI Work?

Artificial Intelligence basically works through an amalgamation of data, and algorithms,  together with high computational power. Now, let me break down some simple steps to explain how this works:

  • Data Collection: First, AI needs a lot of data to learn and understand. This data is collected from various sources in the form of text, audio, videos, and more. For example, if you want to create an AI that recognizes cats in pictures, You need thousands of photos of cats to train the AI.
  • Algorithms: The next step is to set the algorithms. This is the basis of any form of AI after collecting the data.  An algorithm is a set of rules or instructions that AI follows to analyze the data. Think of an algorithm like a recipe; just as the recipe shows you how to make a cake, an algorithm tells artificial intelligence how to process information.
  • Training: After setting the algorithms the AI starts to use the data and algorithms to learn patterns. For example, You might show the AI many different pictures of cats and say that they are “cats.” The AI analyzes these images and begins to understand what features make a cat a cat like ears, whiskers, and fur.
  • Testing: After Completing the training you need to test the AI to see how well it learned. For example, You can show a new picture that the AI hasn’t seen before and check whether the AI can correctly identify cats or not. If it makes mistakes, you can adjust the algorithms and retrain it.

Remember, AI gets better as it processes more data. This process is called machine learning. The more AI is able to learn, the smarter AI will become.

My Experience with AI

Let me share my personal case study involving the use of AI chatbots. Last year, I did a project to create a chatbot for a customer service team. The idea was to help answer common questions from customers.

  • 1. Data Collection: We began with the collection of data from previous customer chats of the business. These included general common questions like “What are your working hours?” and “How much does shipping cost?
  • 2) Training the AI: We fed this data into the training program that created the chatbot. It allows the AI to recognize how customers might ask a question in a variety of ways.  For example, The AI understood that “When do you open?” and “What time are you open?” mean the same thing.
  • 3) AI Testing: Before making this chatbot live, we asked many different questions to test it.  If The AI gave the answer incorrectly, we updated its training data to fix the mistake.
  • 4) AI Launch: Once the chatbot was ready, we mounted the system on the website of this business. Now, customers are able to get instant replies rather than wait for a human to answer their queries.

Case Study: The Results

After the chatbot went live, the Business saw the following positive results:

  • Faster Responses: Instant responses to customers increased customer satisfaction.
  • Cost Savings: The business did not need to employ as many customer service representatives, which saved money in that regard.
  • Learning and Improving: The chatbot kept getting better as more people used it. For example, when it encountered a question it couldn’t answer, we added that to its training data.

One challenge we faced was making the chatbot sound natural. Some customers didn’t like talking to a robot. To solve this, we added a feature that lets users ask for a human agent if needed.

Why AI Matters

AI is powerful because it can handle repetition or processes that are really time-consuming if done by humans. It’s far from perfection and definitely needs guidance in order for it to function well. But if used correctly, it would ease our lives and automate business processes.

If you’re curious about AI, start by experimenting with simple tools like chatbots or email automation tools. You’ll quickly see how AI can solve real-world problems, just like it did in my project.

Summary:

AI is an interesting, powerful technology that works through data, algorithms, and training. I have seen, through the use of chatbots, how AI can make customer service better and people’s lives easier. As I delve deeper into learning about AI, I am fascinated by its potential and the many ways it can be used in our daily lives. Hopefully, this article helps you understand how AI works simply and clearly!
